Seeing how many things it does install and the size of the download, I wouldn't install this on any computer. Looks like FUDware to me.

I don�t see why a 20% increase in speed is going to rock the boat. Especially if it�s in the MBP. So if it is ready for shipment I don�t see any advantage in waiting for the MBP line to upgrade.
I guess I�ll have to do some research about the battery performance.
Noone knows what Steve Jobs will do, but I think he had been roper-doping long enough with the G3 and G4. What 6 years with the same G4? He needs to come out swinging while Apple still has a strong brand name from the iPod.
I hope to see some changes. The last 5 years have been so slow that it hasn�t been worth keeping up with.
At the same clock rates, the battery life for Yonah and Merom are the same, just a boost in computational performance (and slightly less heat, I think?).

I love my wife's macbook keyboard. It is much more comfortable to use, doesn't mark up the LCD display, has much better feedback, and the keys don't pop off inadvertently like my flimsey PowerBook keys.
I want to see a complete redesign of the MacBook Pro. New case, new keyboard, magnetic latch, easy swap HDD & memory access. I don't think it will happen at the Aperature event but I am hoping for a redesign at MWSF2007.
I expect if there is a change on the 25th, it will be merom update only.
i don't understand why people are so desperate for new designs in aluminum MBPs. this is as good as it gets. do you see any commercial or TV shows showing laptops other than Apple ones? you have to wonder why that's the case.....it's because this is the best design in the market.
i can see your point about keyboard but not others such as HDD and memory access....plus, memory is not that difficult to access anyway.
I do think new MBPs will see some nice upgrades in battery life....right now my 15 inch MBPs hit about 3:30 in normal use with brightness level all the way up. maybe new MBPs will have average 4 hours battery life.

1 - I don't know what overheating you talk about, apart from some cases that have been dealt with under AppleCare;

If you check Apple's knowledge database or the manual that come with MBP, it actually says not to put this laptop on top of your lap, or it'll cause discomfort and potentially a burn with prolonged use. Now that's a new thing for a Powerbook or iBook user. Almost all the reviews of MBP state one con throughout, and thats the heat it dissipates. I love all the posts that say, "competition is good, keep Apple on its toes." Problem is, the competition is just copying what Apple has done. Who else is really innovating anything new? Who else has any sort of long term vision of where technology can take us? RIM, MS, HP? Doubtful. Google? All they want is to know everything about you to improve their ability to sell marketing information.
Apple making smart business decisions will only force others to rethink, innovate and create their own demand. Or die. Sorry if you don't like how the free market works.

You may be right, who knows? There seems to be good arguments on both sides to whether Macbooks get Merom in August.
One of the reasons I want an iMac with Conroe (or any intel processor I suppose) is for Boot Camp, and SolidWorks for uni (plus random games, ie. Quake 4, Doom 3 etc ;)). Other than the fact that my cube would die trying to pull along this extremely demanding application, I am 99% certain that it will not run on System anyway. This is another reason I am wanting a Conroe and the X1800, other than for games, it would be perfect for running Solidworks.
Therefore I don't care what's in the Macbook, as I only need it for non processor intensive purposes, with anything else optional. My motive is purely cost-cutting.
Also, I've looked, and I do not believe Australia has a Refurb section of its Store, and I refuse to buy something from eBay.

After ordering a MBP when they were announced and then returning 4 defective units before demanding my money back, I'm going to do the same stupid thing and buy the first Merom MBP I can...

Probably nothing significant but I noticed that all but the standard configuration of the MacBook Pro now ships within 5-7 business days. Last night (Sunday), the same configuration shipped within 3-5 business days.

I'm actually not too thrilled to see this. Mac OS X does NOT need virus protection. Companies like this make OS X seem like it's prone to viruses.

Yeah, you can dismiss this as FUD (and maybe there's some truth to that) but the fact remains--someday, one way or another, there will be a Mac OS X virus. I defy you to find one IT dept. in the country that wants to be caught off-guard by that. If you're going to have Macs in a business environment, the IT staff needs to know that they're protected in the event of an OS X virus outbreak. Whether any OS X viruses exist now or not and whether AV companies are trying to sell products with FUD is irrelevant in that context.
Those of you who want to see wider adoption of Macs in business environments ought to be happy to see this kind of thing showing up, regardless of whether you personally need it or not.

Still, it's cool to see someone finally offer it free. Windows has had multiple choices for a few years, so this is good news for OS X fans!
Sophos provides solutions mainly for large corporations. Its as legitimate as it can get. Whats good about is the small foot print their software takes. So its all business and no nonsense "turbo meters" etc. like with Intego Virus Barrier. Honestly I have no idea why they are giving away Home version for free. The business solutions are expensive. Then again if you really want to sell to corporations it makes sense to give people free home versions to gain presence and goodwill. After all those free Home version using people work in corporations...

I can see this happening. I think it's a very clever move for Apple as they will be going away from commodity chips, will have more control over their chip design, will have better power consumption - which is a big thing with their environmentalism push, they will potentially be able to merge iOS and OSX.
I don't see this as a bad thing and to those saying they won't buy another iMac - that could be true, the Mac may no longer be a brand anymore in 2013.
Apple only went with intel because IBM was never going to be able to make a G5 laptop chip. Why are people so closed minded when it comes to change?

Apparently you wren't looking at macrumors a couple of months ago when the rumors were being posted about the next iphone having an edge-to edge screen.
