Looking at the TouchWiz UI, I see your point.

But, at what point does an interface become too generic? For example, the concept of pages of icons in a grid isn't really new or innovative. The concept of swiping across screens is simple and intuitive and should be copied for that exact reason. Should other phone makers put the icons in a circle, "just because" they need to be different? Should they force you to do something differently just because the best and most intuitive way was "already taken"?

Everyone loves car analogies, so: what if Ford decided to sue other carmakers because they copied their steering wheel design? Would other companies have been forced to adopt other types of controls -- joysticks or dials or foot pedals, perhaps -- "just because"? And would that have been good for the auto industry?

Great way to put it. The icon based UI isn't even close in complexity and innovation to say webOS notifications - which most will end up copying but HP/Palm folks are probably not gonna get cocky about it - as John Rubinstein said - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

It's my device. I paid for it. I should be able to do what ever I want with it.

I too agree, even though mine is just fine un-jail broken, I do like to know that I could if I wanted to.

Heck I'd like to hack my PS3 for the lols, but then Sony might sue me, so before people start spouting about apple being all controlling (which they some times can be) I think they should look at some other closed systems just to see what other companies do, especially to one of the guys who helped you all Jailbreak your phones before moving onto the PS3.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iUvuaChDEg

Even though hacking these systems may lead to some users pirating software, I don't think that they should stop allowing users to hack closed systems (iPhone, Brand X smartphone, Wii, PS3), as long as the user can accept that they shouldn't get any support if they do decide to hack/jailbreak.

    P.S. Give 'em hell Geohot.

I'd be so pissed/happy if it were to become free... 1 year of .Mac and 2 years of MobileMe.

    Pissed, I spent $99 for 3 years

Happy, more people will have access to MobileMe's benefits.

I do not understand this flawed logic. Making it free does not impact the service's values for the last three years. If you did not think it was worth the price you paid, you should not have renewed it.

I say this has someone who has paid for dotmac/mobileme since it stopped being iTools. Unlike you, my average yearly cost was 30 dollars because I bought them off of eBay.

Not exactly. You can always choose to go back to another date in the past.

Assuming you know when the problem began.

The further back you go, the better off you are just restoring to stock.

But then it wouldn't be a Mac Mini, now would it?

    (My first MR post. Ever.)

Well most people attach those hard drive thingies on the bottom, which makes it a little taller anyway.

Oh and welcome to MacRumors. Enjoy your stay.

I'm sure it will be sold in store as well. I just can't see apple cutting Amazon & all the other apple resellers out of the deal.

are people not expecting merom to go immediately into the macbook as well? i don't see a reason for apple to purposely gimp their best-selling notebook when a merom chip is supposed to cost the same as its yonah counterpart.

Right now there is a big price difference between the MB and MBP line but not a whole lot of difference in performance. Putting the Core 2 in the MBP would help differentiate it from the MB. That doesn't mean the MB won't get a speed bump (the Core Duo goes up to 2.33GHz), but Apple might delay putting Merom in the MB to differentiate the lines. I'd pounce on a Merom MB, but I don't think it's going to happen in conjunction with the Merom MBP.

Sort of relieved no iPhone 5 announcements, Im firmly bogged down into a 2 year contract.

    who cares?

There are lot of people waiting for new iPhone hardware, and if Apple doesn't deliver, there stock price is going to plummet.

Also, I'm REALLY tired of Macrumors following their articles with "X source has offered reliable information in the past..." when the given source has offered just as much complete ************ in the past.

Like a few days ago reporting that rumors from BGR come from a reliable source...whereas prior to iPad 2 BGR's rumors were ALL completely 100% fabricated. How quickly we forget.

I reckon Lion will be the last of cat names used for OS X.

They can't really call the next one Ocelot, for example.

Maybe they'll just call the next release Cat? Cat5? Meow? LOLcat?

    Oblig LOLcat:

Anyone knows the terminal command to activate the HiDPI mode under Lion?

I know it can be done using Quartz Debug in Xcode 4, but what about doing it via the terminal?

I could see Apple waiting a while (at least through the back to school season) while the prices on the Yonah processors plummet, and Apple's laptop profit margin skyrockets to even higher levels. I'm guessing Merom's in the MBP and iMac in September (along with the new nano), just in time for the holiday shopping season.

The other side of August does sound reasonable enough to me. Although they may have one MBP with the new chip before then.

Is there a link to a site showing that Google logs the tracking info on their servers?

Many of the arguments on this issue seem to centre on the fact that Android's onboard log only stores the most recent entries and then deletes them, but if they're uploaded to Google that would not only nullify that point, but provide an excellent (and legitimately frightening) counter example.

Google does track their users via Adsense/Google Search. That tracking isn't just location data either. I have no idea how accurate their location data is but they get your IP address every time you use one of their sites or see one of their ads so they do have at least that. Adsense is all about targeted advertising. It is naive to think that Google isn't tracking you.

Now, does this make the location database (which has never been shown to be transmitted anywhere/used to track you) on the iPhone correct? Of course not (it doesn't make it wrong either). Might as well have everyone jump off a cliff is someone does it first.

Jobs is making two points. The first point is that Google tracks a lot of your information. This is true, this is how Adsense works by design. It has worked this way for a very long time and people don't really seem to care. The second point is that Apple is not tracking you. This is somewhat of a semantic argument as Apple indeed is not tracking you (again, no one has shown that this database is ever transmitted). The reasonable concern is that someone could take or find your phone and use the database to learn where you frequent. How likely that is can be addressed a variety of ways (encryption, truncation, etc...). Apple probably won't tell us how it is going to address this until they've actually pushed the patch out (and they'll address it, eventually).

I think the reason why there is no new iphone this year is because maybe apple wants to come out with both at&t and verizone iphone at the same time next year. which would be less of a headache for both carrier and fans.

Weak graphics card standard (GeForce 7300, ugh)
Is the GeForce 7300 better than the GeForce 6800 that was the high-end option with the PowerMac when Steve introduced the 30" Cinema Display?

If so, I'm really behind on the times. :o

Hard for me, even as an Apple fan, to weep too much for a company that chooses to do business overseas isntead of here in America, employing Americans.

Hopefully the situation in Japan improves -- for reasons beyond this.

Oh do shut up. America doesn't have the technology. Furthermore, I am sure prices of your beloved Apple products would increase almost tenfold if Apple didn't have to pay Chinese peasants to make your shiny toys.

I'm surprised it's taken this long, to be honest: I've thought for a long time that Samsung's phones in particular are pretty much a blatant rip-off of Apple's industrial design and user interface.

Indeed, the haters will scream and rant about this lawsuit, but Samsung has a special knack for making their devices look exactly like Apple's equivalents.

How hard would it be for wifi/app store to be baked into every Mac going forward? That is, if you wipe the machine, turn it on, and the first thing it does (after the logo) is detect Wifi, connect and offer the app store along with basic disc utilities right on the memory chip?

Mind you, it wouldn't help existing macs... hrm.
