Things like the forum replies, or like "Will it blend?"?

The "Will it blend?"-series is pure genius. It is not some random Joe smashing stuff, it is a for-profit company spending very few dollars and getting extremely wide coverage.

Its silly things like this that make US companies extremely successful. That guy is laughing all the way to the bank.

Where are the leaked blurry pictures from Asia?
    Vietnamese dealer videos?
    Taiwanese animations?
    Case manufacturers new designs?
    ^This, also...
Where is the prototype that was "accidentally" left in a pub?

This whole thing about the iphone 5 coming out in June...oh wait...maybe not until late September...oh wait...maybe not until fiscal year end 2012, and now the white iPhone 4 (which I held out for) has really really thrown a monkey wrench in my update plans! Ugggggggggggggggggg!

Apple's secretiveness certainly has a negative impact when there are long term contracts involved in purchasing decisions.

Every year, new iPhone around June.

    Why would it be otherwise?

Verizon Phone, iOS5 not being ready, Tsunami in Japan putting supplies into a shortage, take your pick.

and look at the crappy content that they have for streaming. everything is super old. hopefully if apple does this, they would have new content and people wouldn't mind paying more bc the content is better.

Since when is "The other Guys" and "Alice in Wonderland" (2010) old? and for people who said it takes a long time to add to the DVD's and change stuff, it takes 5 minutes after we watch a DVD.

Is that Twitterrific 3 still running, or have you found a way to mod the appearance of Twitterrific 4?

Version 3.2.4 runs fine for me as well. It's much better than Version 4 if you ask me.

I'd have been sold on the 11" if it didn't have nearly 4" worth of bezel. I currently have a 13" MBA and I really hope the next true redesign addresses the bezel issue. I'd love to have a 13" screen on a MBA that has the footprint of the 11" That's really the only thing that will get me to upgrade my MBA. Sandy Bridge refresh is nice, but not reason enough for me to upgrade.

For those 13" owners who are bothered with the fan noise, you really should check out coolbook. I've been running it since I first learned about it and its been fantastic. Battery lasts longer, MBA runs a lot cooler and fan speed has NEVER hit full speed since I started running it.

It is a shame that Coolbook will not work with the SB version of the MBA when it comes out....

The final assembly for a CTO would be done in the USA for an order meant to be delivered in North America. For Europe, it's done in Ireland.
Not sure this is universally true. I've purchased a personal CTO 12-core last year, and 3 more for business use this year, and all of them were "assembled" in Shenzhen (which really amounts to what exactly, popping in 5870s and upping the base 2.66 to 2.93s in two cases). <-- not done in USA though, tracking just showed direct hop to Anchorage, and delivery, in all cases.

Dell, HP and other PC vendors are willing to use discounts and/or incentives to help move systems, and I've even gotten better pricing over the phone than the web site on numerous occasions over the years.
Agreed, other than the random Best Buy/Walmart unloading iCrap at below cost, every single human being who can flash any kind of college ID, gets a discount at every single Apple store on Earth. If you're buying personally, you can also get the rather nice 25% EPP discount if you happen to do work for Apple (or have a friend who does). If you want something which is in short supply/white-hot, you may have to wait a month or two before the EPP has it; but Mac Pros are always available immediately, it's not like there is a mass stampede to buy the things and highly limited supply with overwhelming demand <-- has never happened in the past half decade. 25% off an iPhone or iPad, amounts to meh, but chop that price off a Mac Pro loaded up with ACDs, and it's pretty significant.

While the EPP may not be a viable option for most people, as nanofrog said, you'd be surprised what just picking up the phone and talking with a human being can accomplish (especially if you are making corporate purchases), and if none of the previous apply, surely you can find one college student/faculty member somewhere within your social circle (please insert avalanche of, "ohhhhhh, you're a bad bad bad person, nobody should do that, it's morally and ethically wrong!" rants [here]. The response to which is, from my end anyway <shrug> I don't really care, and I'm a shareholder with a f--kton of Apple stock, feel free to notify the karma police, a hall monitor, and your mom).

Yes, I noticed an immediate temp rise too - 5c or thereabouts and now the fan is running with only safari open.

    Maybe I shouldn't have done it.:o

When is Apple going to figure out how to implement software patches instead of forcing people to download a whole copy of the OS for every little update?

Yeah, ~700MB a time is getting really daft. I can't believe they couldn't find a better way to do this.

It's typical of Apple though, assuming everyone in the world has the same internet connection that they do.

there is no "mac pro tax"

    there is

Brand tax - what all brands (HP, Dell, etc) charges extra VS buying loose components

Workstation grade component tax - the price you pay extra for workstation components, ECC RAM, Xeon CPU, etc, vs desktop components

Apple update tax - Apple does not lower price (rarely) on the model cycles, making it out of sync (read: more expensive) against component and competitor prices towards end of cycle

I'll be looking forward to Leopard whenever it does come out, but I'm going to the Apple Store today to pick up a new MacBook. My G4 400 Powerbook  is on its last legs.

(of course there is also a possibility of walking out of the store with a MacPro, MacBook Pro, & iPod (Shuffle, Nano (every color), Video).

Hardly a problem. You can get a new shuffle and a 1 gig USB jump drive for alot less then the old 1 gig shuffle cost.

Or just pick up a refurb shuffle from the online Apple Store. They still gottem. The even have iPod minis there still so I'm sure the shuffle will be available as a refurb item for some time to come.

The share thing is quite tricky isnt it?
Last time there is a report adding the sale of ipads to the apple computers, then apple instantly overreaches at least two major pc competitors in only one quater? i believe most CS5 users run their job on non-mac platform, and adobe may have that data. Just curious whether CS5 shows the same performance on both platforms if identical computer resources are offered. I guess those editors have their preference since they usually possess several workstations for specific jobs and they can try it out.

I actually work in a place that sells and designs high end workstations for people, and there are a lot of people running CS5 on macs. Many editors work with both, and even if they prefer CS5 FCP is still used a lot, and not being able to open a FCP project could cost you a client. It is best to go with a system that can run all major NLE's (FCP, CS5, and Avid). Also the cost of a PC editing workstation is not much cheaper then a Mac workstation.

And don't forget Davinci Resolve, which only works on Macs.

It's good that you apologized before giving us all this misinformation!
Apple in fact offers some of the CHEAPEST rackmount servers. That's why they were used for the Virginia Tech cluster remember!!

Go to Dell's page, I just customized one of their PowerEdge 2950's to be EXACTLY the same as the Xserve (except for the OS) and here's the diff:

    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    $6,749.00 - $1000 because it's over $5000
so... $5749 (just the fact that they can take $1000 off if you're spending over $5000 shows how much extra they are charging customers!)
Dual Core Intel Xeon, 4MB Cache, 3.00GHz, 1333MHz FSB
    Operating System Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard x64 Edition,Includes 5 CALs
    Additional Processor
Dual Core Intel Xeon 5160, 4MB Cache, 3.00GHz, 1333MHZ FSB
    Memory
    1GB 533MHz (4x256MB), Single Ranked DIMMs
Riser Card Riser with 3 PCIe Slots
    Primary Hard Drive
    80GB, SATA, 3.5-inch, 7.2K RPM Hard Drive
    Primary Controller
PERC 5/i, x4 Backplane, Integrated Controller Card

    Apple Xserve
    $4,798.00
    Two 64-bit 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
1.33GHz frontside bus and 4MB shared L2 cache per processor
1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM)
    80GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive1
Built-in ATI Radeon X1300 graphics with 64MB RAM
    Mac OS X Server 10.4 Unlimited-Client Edition

So go back to your mummy and cry! At a fraction of the price the Xserve is actually a better machine because I could not get 667Mhz DDR2 for the Dell! The Dell also has no graphics card!

This is not including the fact that Apple gives substantial discounts if you order a stack of these with a RAID!

So when you say 'Dells'... be very specific!!!
Rackmount Dells with Woodcrest Xeons (just like the Xserve) are a LOT more expensive than just some Dell server that is apparently 1/5 of the price of the Xserve.

It is a MYTH that Dell is cheap! Stack them side-to-side with Apple on any level and their machines are generally either the same price or more expensive than Apple's.

Our company was buying Dell servers when I came to work there. Between 2002 and we replaced 2 motherboards and FOUR backplanes. If you have never had a backplane failure, it is ugly. The SCSI controller cards plug into it. When it goes, your data looks like a bunch of smiley faces looking back at you. Dell was very quick to replace our failed hardware, and even faster to apologize. We only have one of the original 13 Dell servers left. I will not buy another. Add that to your TOC.
