    $3-4.99 rentals of brand new movies would be awesome. Otherwise, "meh"

    I can't get to excited about this, it will take me 10 hours to download 2GB :eek:

    You guys do realize that a 27" iMac would have to be 4K to possess a PPI over 300 and therefore be a "Retina Display?"

    You sit 12 inches away from your iMac screen ? :confused:

    These companies can just float away on their clouds. Cloud-based would make sense if there was wireless and cellular completely covering the nation/world... using cloud at this time would castrate their share of market. I take "cloud-based" rumors as pure rumors at this time. Maybe in 2020 it will be feasible, and no doubt it is being developed. However, by 2020 we will have 1TB iPads. What's the point of cloud, then? Control? Observation?

    There are a lot of reasons. One would be the release of a top-engineered product in October to compete with other products set to compete with the iPad2 at that time. Those pads seem to have this lPad1 spec sheet behind them. If Apple wants to crush competition they should do dual releases for a couple years and constantly update hardware and software to trounce the others which might ruin their grip on the market.

    Physical USB? With a computer that can connect through a dock? What's the big deal? iPads only have 32GB. What would be the use of some giant connector? iPad will do without clunky, redundant additions for a while.

    iPads actually have 64GB models.

    Not to add onto the whining about merom notebooks, but I thought people a little while back were saying they'd be coming on the apple event on the 12th...:confused:

    Yeah, that was prior to the invites sent out. Jobs from experience will be pitching the movie store hard..meaning the laptop updates have to take a back seat for now. I mean they announced a 24" iMac quietly just to give you an idea of how important this is to them. Laptop updates? i wouldnt count on it...at least for now

    I beg to differ. I've even heard stock analysts anticipating the release of the iPhone. It's not a matter if Apple is going to release it, its a matter of when.

    Nor, methinks this iPhone shall ever happen. What would Apple gain in becoming a cell phone provider? Its a nasty market with no concensus between camps.

    Sorry, its vaporware.

    Hmm... Cinema displays also got a bump.

    20" ACD
    Brightness: 250 cd/m2 -> 300 cd/m2
    Contrast Ratio: 400:1 -> 700:1

    23" ACD
    Brightness: 270 cd/m2 -> 400 cd/m2
    Contrast Ratio: 400:1 -> 700:1

    Oww.I saw the rpice drop but not the spec boost. I thought Apple was trying to clear older stock but now I think this is the new monitor and we caren't going to see one with an iSight built in. New iSight maybe...

    You complain about "imposing beliefs", but asking people to "say a prayer" on the forum is certainly pushing one's beliefs on others. I suggested "best wishes" and "keeping them in your thoughts" as an alternative that doesn't involve supernatural beings.

    And, by the way, the "flying spaghetti monster" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster) is part of a well-known movement (sometimes called the "Pastafarians") to preserve the concept of "separation of church and state" embodied in the US Constitution.

    If you ever see the FSM emblem
    http://www.evolvefish.com/fish/media/E-FlyingSpaghettiEmblem.gif
    on the car in front of you, you're behind a Pastafarian.

    You're missing the point. No one got bitter until you came in and knocked him for encouraging people to pray for Japan. Prayer can be whatever you want it to be. You can either pray to God or simply give your best wishes as you said. There was absolutely no need for your out of the blue post blasting him for asking people to pray. Atheists love to point towards the religious as being the pushy ones, but time and time again I've noticed it's the atheists who take things personally and get bitter. I myself don't really give a damn what anyone says, I'm moreso of a Deist than a mainstream Christian. Both sides of the aisle can get extremely childish, like your post mocking prayer. It served no other purpose than to try and insult him and anyone else who believes in God.

    That's NOT the context here.

    I'm the one that raised the point in the first place! I think I set the context!

    And don't tell me you take the EULA seriously.

    I do. I don't have any need to violate it. I only have one Mac.

    All of my computers have a fully licenced copy of Windows XP or 7 on them.

    What are the odds that Apple Stores will offer to upgrade the Yonah processors in the MacBooks, iMacs, and Minis to the Merom chips (for a fee, of course)?

    I'm guessing they won't do this, but I thought I'd ask.

    Personally, I think that iP4 is the most aesthetically pleasing phone on the market. I'm not surprised to hear they will not change the design because the transition from 3G to 3Gs was similar.

    The faster processor isn't necessarily a good enough reason for me to upgrade because the apps that I use regularly perform more than adequately on my iP4 (probably on 3G/3Gs models too). If I decide to start shooting more video (and editing it) or do other heavy lifting on my phone I will consider upgrading.

    That being said, I think it is important for Apple to upgrade to a dual core processor, increase the memory, and make it capable of using at least one 4G network to compete with the latest Android based phones on the market.

    Ok, I'll try this question, which is a fair question...............

    Everyone says again and again, Apple does not aim for the high end.
    If we put Mac Pro's to one side as they are the proper PC's of the Apple Mac world.

    Let's speak about iMac's

    They are Apple mass consumer, man/woman in the street computers.
    They type of customers who just want to enjoy their computer and be able to get the jobs they want done in a nice and easy way.

    I think that's a fair statement.

    Also, as has been said, over and over and OVER again, these customers, that the iMac's are aimed at, are not Nerds, Not Tech Freaks, Not spec junkies.
    They are just normal people who probably don't want to be worried about specs and to be honest as long as it looks nice and moves smoothy on screen, don't care what's inside the case.

    Given this. If these "typical consumers, who don't care or really know about specs" are today, looking at their current 1920x1080 screens, or 1920x1200 screens, and they cannot see the individual pixels from their normal, let's say two feet away viewing distance, then what on earth would be the point in increasing costs, and slowing down an iMac by lumbering it with a higher resolution screen?

    What is the point, for these consumers, to increase the screen resolution when they can't make out the individual pixels currently?

    In the not too distant future we will be getting convertible iMac's. You have all seen the patents that Apple have applied for, where the screen tilts into a more horizontal position on your desk and is usable as a touch screen device.

    When in this mode the screen will be a lot closer to your eyes and would greatly benefit from being higher resolution

    even google disagrees with you - they wish in the meantime to have forced more control over the carriers (as they already admitted in the public) :D

    Right. At the end of the day, customers chose with their wallets, and as of this year, more customers are choosing Android than iPhone (throw out Android tablet and iOS tablet as those are different categories and distort reality).

    If Apple cannot beat them....they sue them.Why not, as in this case, do both?

    Apple can beat them in the market; they can beat them in the courtroom.

    Go to any Apple website and check the published specs for iPhone 4/3Gs or iPad with 3Gs. Here's a link to help with that:

    http://www.apple.com/ca/channel/iphone/iphone-4/tour/specs.html

    You will see that Apple does not just offer GPS, it offers "Assisted" GPS. Here we once again see Apple's zeal to optimize. The location cache that's causing all the fuss is what provides the "Assist". Some secret.

    When you are moving about, your device notes and identifies cell towers that come in range. It gathers their identification, which initially does not include location. It then further queries a database to get the location info. The location is associated with that tower ID, and the two together are stored in the "notorious" cache.

    When a device owner seeks to use GPS the program assists by instantly getting a preliminary location fix by accessing cell ID and location info in the cache. Without the cache, it would have to seek the cell tower location info first, so the existence of the cache speeds the finding of preliminary location info. That info is used to speed up the tracking and locking-on of the device to the GPS satellite.

    So, the cache exists to enable a faster GPS lock.

    Sinister?

    No, but maybe a bit sloppy, I don't know enough to be able to say for sure. Maybe Apple should only log and locate a tower once, which would limit the adding of current data. Maybe the file should always be encrypted.

    I suspect we will find out, because legislators in the US and Europe have become involved and this trivial-seeming issue won't go away.

    But, with regard to the Steve Jobs email, it does seem clear that Apple is collecting no information. Apple may once again be the victim of it's zeal to optimize features.

    And again this, Assisted GPS does not mean it doesn't have a GPS AGAIN.

    Assisted GPS means it has a GPS but is also Assisted by the cell towers to get a location faster. Most GPS devices use Assisted GPS for speed and accuracy anymore.

    Really? So we just disregard the ACTUAL start and end times of seasons now? June 21 to Sept 21 is summer.

    Calendar wise it is... but most people don't view the middle of September as "summer". Meteorological summer is over by then, and that's MUCH more important, IMO.

    In other words, you couldn't port Linux to the iPhone if you wanted to.

    I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but they already have ported it:

    http://www.idroidproject.org/

    Android is just another customized Linux, and the iDroid project ports Android to Apple's iGadgets.

    just out of curiosity, what type of work?

    Lots of places require antivirus software installed to access their internet. I'm at uni and no mac or pc will get internet access unless they pass a test with valid and up to date antivirus. I think it's a good thing, even for mac users, as it limits the amount of viruses that are passed on.

    We get McAfee on a uni license, but this might make me consider Sophos instead if it's lighter on system resources (the only thing I don't like about antivirus software...)
