...Besides ongoing software testing, RIM was also unable to procure enough touch panels since "Apple already booked up most of the available capacity".
    ...

This is a nice narrative but very unlikely.
    1. RIM is a very experienced hardware developer that knows perfectly well how to procure the components it needs well ahead of time.

    2. Realistically, they need only a relatively tiny number of screen to launch. What Apple is doing isn't on an entirely different level and isn't really going to distrupt the tiny production runs that RIM is going to start with. They won't start competing with Apple for production capacity until they have a hit on their hands. Obviously that may never happen.

Much more likely they have some serious bugs to fix before they can release. They basically admit as much with the euphamism "ongoing software testsing."

What do you guys think, should we wait or go ahead and buy from somewhere else. Or just wait fo Magellans car kit?

Hard call. I like the idea that I would not have to remove my case to use the Magellan, but that's all I like about the look of it. It looks cheaper to me and I'm guessing we would be waiting until the end of January, or later, before the price would start to drop from $130. From viewing the many Youtube videos on the TomTom car kit it seems pretty great for $90.

    WOW!

    This would be AWESOME!
I can't imagine my 27" iMac with the same resolution as an iPhone 4!

This said, it could potentially make macs more expensive in the future.....:(

Well Done Apple! You've done it again!

Wow, that would look rly horrible, i mean 960x640 on a 27 inch screen:eek:

Just joking, u probably meant DPI.

[SIZE=1]Contrary to what may most competitors seems to believe, apple customers don't come back for the hardware but rather the amazing software.

Not entirely true. For me it's both.

I still have 3G. Wanted to get the white 4, kept waiting for it, then finally decided I might as well wait for 5. Now even that is going to get delayed.

Turns out, trusting Apple's promises and release cycles made me a fool. The only behavior that seems to be awarded is: give Apple money is soon as you can and don't ask any questions.

No, Apple didn't make you a fool, you made yourself look like a fool.

Apple never comments on products before they're released.

Apple does not have an "official" release schedule for unreleased products.

Is there a pattern for Apple's releases? Yes, there is, but there is also a pattern for weather to and we know how that works out.

Why do people feel that they should be rewarded for buying products. That's just stupid.

It's sad but it's starting to sound like that's exactly what anti-Apple people want. They're making it sound like Apple regularly colludes with suppliers. Maybe it does, but there's no proof, or at least Apple buying up the supply of touch panels certainly doesn't constitute proof.

Apple legitimately amassed a large cash reserve. Apple is using that massive hoard of cash to secure the best possible deals with component suppliers. If that's called anticompetitive, then I don't know what to say.

+1 its not anticompetitive, its smart. Apple actually MOVES these things and people buy them. It would only be anti-competitive if they bought a ton of them on purpose and never used them.

The amount of anti-apple on mac rumors is sickening anymore. Its like going to engadget.

Apple *have* patented the look of icons: http://www.edibleapple.com/apple-granted-eu-patents-on-24-ios-icon-designs/ and Samsung clearly infringes on them.

(I'm not sure if a similar, US patent exists.)
You can't patent the "look" of an icon in the U.S.
    You copyright it.
And I'd seriously doubt many of them would survive a court challenge.

I just don't understand the thought of an iPad 3 this fall. Unless they're trying to line up iPad updates with iPod updates, I don't see how this is possible or even really needed. I like the timing of the current releases. It offsets any updates of iPhones and iPods because they all have different release times.

Having iOS 5 this fall does make sense, honestly.

Everyone assumes that iPad 3 is a direct upgrade/replacement for iPad 2. This doesn't have to be the case at all. If it is even real, it could be any number of things, it could be sub seven inch, a thirteen inch machine, a machine that supports 4G and Retina or any number of other configurations.

I have no doubt in my mind that Apple will eventually deliver iPads in sizes other than the current model. It only makes sense as it offers solutions for people with different needs. However such a machine (a smaller iPad) needs lower power hardware than what is seen in ipad 2. I believe that hardware is coming for iPhone 5 to allow for the performance boost without killing the battery.

Well, the fact is that there is one iPhone, and ten Android phones. But anyway, of course this fact is relevant. If I have 10 chances to do something, and only one chance to do something else... how often do you think the 1 in 10 chance is going to come around.... maybe 1 in 10 times?

That's rather flawed reasoning. Unless you actually believe that people buying a smartphone will just pick one randomly. The outcome here isn't random, nor is the chance for every outcome 1/10.

I hope people don't get their hopes up, then start posting negative threads all over the place when not all the rumors come true at WWDC.

Unlikely - New iPods, Mini and MacBook
Not sure - New iMac, MacBook Pro
Likely - ACD update or price slash.
Highly likely - New Power Mac called Mac Pro.

Admittedly, I didn't read the article posted by rdowns, but from reading the quotes he put in the OP, I'd have to say I disagree somewhat with your comments. Sure, we should all be working together, but the point is that those who are making the most are not paying at the same share/percentage as those who are lower or middle income.

I believe in progressive chipping in.

I have no problem doing my part to pay taxes as I do benefit from roads, schools, etc., but I do have a problem with a lot of the wasteful ways in which tax money is spent. We could all benefit from some efficiency, improved budgeting, and controlled spending on the government level.

No doubt. However, while waste and efficiency is one thing, I think we can also benefit from an examination of our national priorities.

And while it's probably not practical, I'd love to see a system where taxpayers actually had some say in where their taxes went. Imagine a system where the government took 50% of taxes to distribute as it pleased and gave the taxpayer a checklist of programs to distribute the other 50%.

In my case, the military would get nothing. Abortions for unwed mothers, on the other hand, could afford gold-plates scalpels. (Kidding ... just kidding. They'd still have to use the regular kind.)

Not as far as 95% of users are concerned. Most users don't utilize half of what the current device can do.

That might be true, but most people I know walk in to their cell phone stores every 2 years and buy whatever is new. Many of them will choose a new Android or WP7 phone over a year-old iPhone, simply because the guy at the store says "this just came out."

As long as Apple is in bed with carriers on the standard two-year contract, they have to stick to a 12 or 24 month product cycle. 24 months is too long, which leaves the current 12 month cycle.

Personally I think this is all FUD. iPhone 5 will be an incremental upgrade, like the 3GS was, and it will be announced at WWDC. Because it's a fairly small upgrade compared to the other big items of the year (Lion, iOS 5, and likely new Macs with more of a focus on SSD), there will be less talk about it in advance of the event.

Why not just use an app that lets you stream from your computer at home? why pay for online storage when you already have it?

they expect most people to use it from an android phone with very little local storage. and they already built out AWS over the last few years and this is just monetizing some of the extra capacity they have. they are probably using single instance storage for the music so it's not like there are going to be thousands of copies of every song on their servers

Things are only getting worse in Japan...

    Hopefully everything gets under control

Yeah after they radiate themselves to mutation, and then the rest of the world, they 'll get it under control.

At some point the global community should hold the nuclear manufacturers responsible for crimes against humanity. This is not only a Japanese issue that they 've been handling with half truths and botching it up. This concerns the world. When Chernobyl hit we where blaming the "bad" commies for concealing the truth, and it's the same and worse from Japan twenty five or so years after...

Anyway best of luck to the Japanese people, I wish them courage, but I think the japanese government has a lot to answer for to the rest of the world. Had this happened in some other supposedly authoritarian regime, say Libya, you 'd have had foreign occupation to resolve the dreaded nuclear threat. Alas it's not, and the rest of the world is focusing on their oil in Libya. Billions of dollars for arms are spent against Libya, surely, some global task force with the same amount of money would have handled the nuclear threat much much better in Japan as well as helping people out who 've suffered as a result of the earthquake and tsunami... but it seems people are not evolved enough to care for the future of humanity, but for the short term future of their oil investments they act faster than lightning.

    Really disappointing.

Glad I didn't decide to buy a new MBP in June! I have plans to wait until after WWDC, but I think we might see a change in processor before than. I don't see moving to a newer Intel chip as being a "big" developer issue.
Well, when you couple the fact it's an entirely new architecture for intel, along with being 64-bit, it might tie in nicely at the developer conference. I expect Leopard to evolve into a full 64-bit OS so these chips can would make for a great entrance at WWDC...IMO.

Since Fry's is already selling Sony ATAPI Blu-ray burners for $750, why doesn't Apple see the selling opportunity as an offering on the Mac Pro BTO page? They dont even offer a $120 Plextor SATA DVD Burner on that page yet. Seems like they are being extremely conservative about adopting the next generation of Para-Superdrives. It's a conundrum to me.

For whatever reason, Apple seems to not want to endorse Blu-ray nor HD-DVD yet by not offering either one. Guess they're not sure themselves which they think will be best for us in the long run or which one will win in the marketplace? I am confused about what's going on on this front.

Speaking personally, I'm not terribly interested in either right now.

Having said that, is there a (big enough) market for it? Stand-alone player sales have been pretty lacklustre, with HD-DVD outperforming Blu-Ray, but even it isn't doing wonderfully. The large capacity of the writable disc would be nice but the black media is too expensive to be worthwhile right now.

I guess it's possible they won't until they have playback software ready for OS X -- which would likely mean around the time of Leopard, I guess? It might make more sense then, unless you think Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) are going to be big this "Holiday Season"? That would certainly change everything...

Next year might be the one to go for, esp. if the PS3 looks being the big seller for Christmas 2007... it also gives them time to pick which to offer, be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (or offer both?) depending upon the fortunes of either/both. I doubt their comments on supporting Blu-Ray thus far are terribly binding (tho the MS-based environment used by HD-DVD might be a deal-killer...).

I'd be so pissed/happy if it were to become free... 1 year of .Mac and 2 years of MobileMe.

    Pissed, I spent $99 for 3 years

Happy, more people will have access to MobileMe's benefits.

I do not understand this flawed logic. Making it free does not impact the service's values for the last three years. If you did not think it was worth the price you paid, you should not have renewed it.

I say this has someone who has paid for dotmac/mobileme since it stopped being iTools. Unlike you, my average yearly cost was 30 dollars because I bought them off of eBay.
