No. The number of core in the system does not imply you need more memory however it does imply you may need more memory bandwidth (depends on what you plan to use the cores for).

Running many applications, especially memory hungry ones, concurrently is what could require additional memory to run efficiently (depends on working set of the applications you plan to run).

With that said ... to get the most memory bandwidth potential in a Mac Pro you need fully populate peer banks with DIMMs. For example in the following graphic you would want to populate slots A1, A2, B1 and B2 before any other slots to get the widest data path to memory.

    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTech_RAM/Art/060634001312_05.jpg

For more details on Mac Pro memory review Mac Pro RAM Expansion Details (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTech_RAM/Articles/RAM_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003899-DontLinkElementID_3) or the simpler to read Mac Pro Memory Guide (pdf) (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacPro_MemoryDIMM_DIY.pdf)One question about 512MB vs 1 & 2 GB mod bandwidth. If the Mac comes with two 512MB mods installed in Riser A and I buy two 2GB modules to put into Riser B - total 5GB, will the slower bandwidth (or whatever it's called) of the two 512MB mods slowing down the faster 2GB mods be offset by having RAM installed in both risers rather than pulling the 512's and only having two 2GB mods installed in Riser A only - total 4GB? The difference of 1GB of RAM doesn't seem like that part would matter if the 512 mods slow everything down.

I know this thread is probably full of pro video geeks so don't eat me alive here. What's the primary difference between FCP and Express aside from the fact that Final Cut Pro is packaged in a suite of applications?

Pretty sure FCE doesn't support 24fps, which is kinda a problem for film editing, and an increasingly bigger problem for other work as 24fps gets used more. IIRC, it doesn't have stuff like the color scopes or audio mixer either. The main difference is the suite though.

I think that one thing a lot of people have missed is a very palatable shift in how anti-gay groups are viewed after the passage of Prop 8. No longer is using your religious beliefs to deny civil rights to gays and lesbians seen as acceptable, it's now joined the ranks of racism and many hate groups who rightfully are not given an elevated place in a civilized society. Prop 8 has been called Stonewall 2.0, but I think it is more like the first Stonewall for those outside of the gay community. It woke a lot of people up to how the GLBT community is treated by an oppressive majority (in the last year they are no longer the majority, a tipping point has been reached and hopefully there is no turning back).

    Good point. The "Straight Stonewall."

no, all politicians wave the "privacy" banner... they don't want their employers (i.e. you and me) to know where they've been.

Well, with the Intel Core roadmap for 2016 possibly getting up to close to 300 heterogeneous cores per motherboard/PC, certainly Windows is out of the race but OS XX 20.x will have to have evolved to probably DAML/OWL Semantic Web Ontology based, with System Strategy and System Policy Reasoners, i.e. a Cognitive OS with a flexible Operating Envelope. I think that would definitely make Safari snappier!

Well, this reminds me of that presentation given by Steve Jobs (on the new G4s, I think), where he said, for a certain specific technology ("latent semantic" or whatever) that:

"I have no idea what that is; but trust me, it works..!" :p

Who really needs more iLife. Honestly. I think they should bundle it with OS X, and update it all at once!

the 27 imac is a beast!!!!!
God I wish I had the money to get it.

I didn't have the money, but I bought it anyways. Loaded to the hilt except only 8g instead of 16gb of memory. I call it the iBeast. It brings me great pleasure.

hopefully it's going to look like this:

    56364

I agree, I want an iMac like computer with the aluminum housing; looks better on my desk! ;)

At any rate, hopefully the form factor will be thinner. I can see the 17" eventually being relegated to eMac status.

That's not clever at all. You'd still be stuck with the Intel GPU on the internal screen.

Not if they redesign the Macbooks so the video signal goes back the other way down the thunderbolt cable and directly to the display.

    Although using a 2GB HD 6970 on a 1280x800 display is a bit silly.

Even though Apple is Apple, going up against Amazon, which will have more movie options at the time of launch is going to be tough...

unless... they release some sort of new hardware [full screen ipod, plzkthx] that will take the spotlight.

Here's hoping for "one more thing"... on Sept 12.

I think it's funny that this is pretty much the only mention of Amazon in this thread... even though Amazon will be announcing a competing movie store in a few days with supposedly much more content than Apple's offering! :D

It just shows how people think that Amazon will simply not be able to compete with what Apple has up it's sleeve. You just *know* that Apple would not announce this thing until they had the end-to-end user experience worked out to perfection - iPod-iTunes styleee - effectively using hardware and software that works seamlessly and that anyone can pick up and use.

In contrast, Amazon will launch a service that will have a very comprehensive back catalog but will be frustrating to use as after downloading your movie, your options will be:

"App Store" is a trademarked name of a particular store. "appstore," or "app store" in generic terms and context is a description of a particular thing. How hard is it for these companies to understand that that's possible? Just the same as "Windows" vs. "windows." Actually, I think they do get it, but they don't want "App Store" associated only w/ Apple so they can jump on the bandwagon and (continue to try to) confuse consumers.

However, using the term app store to relate to any type of software market will lead to confusion between generic app stores and Apple's App Store - which makes it a trademark violation.

No one is going to confuse MS Windows with the windows in your house.

It does not. With this new glass, I don't feel I need one. A screen protector is far softer and would take more damage in dents and scratches, not to mention expensive (and a pain) to replace.

One more question. For the glass side, if you were to put it face down on a table or flat surface, would the glass make contact or is there a pretty good space?

I used to love that I could do this with the Incase slider for my 3G iPod Touch.

Well I hope it doesn't come too soon. Blu-ray is just too expensive right now and it would jack up Mac cost significantly. It's also better to see how the Blu-ray vs HD DVD thing works out as well just to make sure Apple doesn't back a dead horse.

I wouldn't hold my breath on the word processing and web surfing. WebTV showed surfing the internet on a TV sucked because trying to read normal-sized text from six feet away was hard, and bumping the text size up would goof up the page layout generally. Same reason word processing would be silly.

    Here is your quote SeaFox.

You are an condescending individual and take my post out of context.

I sure hope DanCosich's post is true! I just had my 12" Powerbook stolen from me last week and my insurance company is paying for an equal replacement or if one isn't available, the next thing up. Looks like a 15" MBP is the next thing up! Going from a 1.33GHz G4 to a C2D MBP is just a plain silly upgrade. I'm out $1000 from a deductible, but that's quite the upgrade for $1000. I'd say it was worth the theft except the fact that my car got busted up as well.

    *crosses fingers*

    Wow, that is a shocker.

The U.S. Congress passed a law to prohibit any attempt to assassinate any foreign leader.

Why, I don't know, but there it is.

I saw on CNN that our intention was to cripple the opposition, and if it so happens that Qaddafi is in that building then that is purely coincidental. :D

Isn't it funny that the world acts like a bunch of 10-year-olds when it comes to war? Did I say funny? I meant sad, dangerous, and catastrophic.
